Alone On The Holidays

I love the Fall, but it also means that the holiday season is coming and I don't enjoy that time of year. Holidays and families go hand in hand and when you don't have much family and spend holidays alone they are only a reminder of what you don't have. All over the internet are stories of gatherings and meals and as women we have to gather up the latest stuffing recipes and learn how to bake a better turkey to feed the gang. My hat's off to you men who pitch in and help with the planning and cooking.
So it's no wonder the holiday season is one of depression for many. It's in your face day after day for months telling you over and over what a big loser you are. Where's your nice home and big table with every chair filled with loved ones? Why is it that the happy times have passed you by as you watch everyone else enjoy these blessings.
The truth is that you are not alone and with this economy the way it is, you are really not alone. Many people have lost things, but how many have lost their families? That's where I find my self in a different spot than most. I have lost both, but in the mean time I have found a greater place. I'm not part of a loving, caring family ...
- except for my kids (two live far away), but I have found a place of reassurance and contentment. It has taken a while to accept my place in life at this time in my life, but it sure is nice to know that "he will never leave me nor forsake me". People can't be counted on, but God can be.
I have a bit of advice for those of you who will be alone for Thanksgiving and Christmas, concentrate (and help if you can) others who are struggling. There is always someone worse off than you are, and I doubt we will have to look far this year to see someone to encourage and by doing so we will help ourselves.
My next post will tell you how you can help without giving anything but a little computer time. If you have nothing but time to give, but don't want to get out there in the world - I hear ya - and what better way to pass the day than to do something worthwhile.
When depression starts to creep in, turn off the television (those commercials are great for making us feel bad) and remind yourself that you are not alone. God is watching you and he wants to see what you will do with what you've been given. I want to do my best to please Him.
